The Institute for Dutch Language Education (INTT), Universiteit van Amsterdam and The Amsterdam-Maastricht Summer University present the 2019 season of the intensive Dutch language course. This very successful course, which each year is overbooked, will give applicants a serious and exiting professional experience in just a few weeks. Working in smaller groups and with a proven methodology is part of the success, a cultural program is included.

Brief introduction of the levels offered 

Level 1: Absolute Beginners: For students without any knowledge of Dutch whatsoever.

Level 2: Beginners: For students who do understand some Dutch but are (almost) incapable of making themselves understood in Dutch.

Level 3: Pre-intermediate: For students with a global understanding of simple everyday Dutch, capable of making themselves understood in simple everyday Dutch that is still full of mistakes. 

Level 4: Intermediate: For students with a reasonable understanding of simple everyday Dutch and of Dutch used in the media, capable of making themselves understood in simple everyday Dutch with many mistakes. 

Level 5: Pre-Advanced: For students with a good understanding of everyday Dutch and of Dutch used in the media. Capable of making themselves understood in everyday Dutch but with quite a few mistakes.

Level 6: Advanced: For those who have a thorough understanding of everyday Dutch and a good understanding of Dutch at an academic level. They can express themselves in spoken and written Dutch in most everyday and professional situations but still make systematic mistakes.

NB. Those who have no problems understanding Dutch at an academic level are too advanced for these courses. This program is NOT meant for foreigners intending to do a regular 4 year-study at the University of Amsterdam. 

Language of instruction 

In the course for absolute beginners the language of instruction is English and Dutch. In the other courses, the language being used in the classroom is mainly or exclusively Dutch. 

Capacity 

Participants will be divided in groups of 14-18 persons according to the result of the assessment on the first day (please read below).  

Formation of groups

Registration Sunday 4th of August.

On the first day of the course (Monday the 5th of August 2019) each participant's level of command of the Dutch language will be assessed to make sure everyone is placed in the appropriate group. If there are two or more groups on the same level, the groups will be formed as homogeneous as possible. In order to get familiar with the building and the language laboratory a guided tour will be part of the first day. If necessary, groups will be reshuffled after one or two weeks.  

Work load

The course lasts for three weeks. It involves four hours of teaching a day. The lessons are scheduled between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. every day, apart from the Wednesdays in the 2nd and 3rd week. Participants are expected to do two or three hours of homework every day.

Location

All lectures are given in buildings of the University of Amsterdam, located in the historic centre of Amsterdam.

Course fee & Application

The course fee (€ 1195) covers all study material during the course (but not the textbooks mentioned below) and the pass for the language laboratory. Due to great demand for this course only immediate payment will secure your participation in this course. Reservations are not possible.

Welcome reception 

The complementary welcome reception will take place on Sunday 4th of August 2019 between 3-5 pm in a location to be announced in Amsterdam city centre. Lessons will start on Monday, 5th of August 2019 with the level assessment test. 

Certificate

On completion of the course a certificate of attendance will be given.

Absolute beginners

The aim of the course is: To improve participants' writing and speaking skills. Some attention will be paid to reading, listening and extending vocabulary.
